Bug-Eyes

As a child I was obsessed, for a time, with the bizarre novelties found in the old JOHNSON SMITH company catalogs. Coming soon...

I whipped up this latest compilation in honor of WFMU's annual pledge drive, which begins later on this month. The term "one-liner" was coined by WFMU DJ Debbie D. to describe pop tunes which are for the most part instrumentals--without lyrics, except for the occasional vocal utterance of a word or phrase ("Tequila," by the Champs, is one well-known example). Loads of these surreal rock-&-rollers were recorded in the '50s & '60s (titles include "Crazy Vibrations," "Groovy," "Greeazzy," "Trashcan," "Take It Off," "Beaver Shot," "Ooba Gooba," etc.) Debbie has been collecting & compiling the best of these one-liners for a couple of years now. Her third & latest one-liners disc will be available as a bonus during the upcoming pledge drive. She's inspired me to make this similarly-themed comp, which will only be available when you make your pledge to good old WFMU. Watch this space for updates/details...and be sure to visit the weird & wonderful WFMU ICHIBAN blog (clickable link in my right-hand sidebar).
